The spirituality of the Pauline Fathers
The life of the Pauline Father’s order runs according to the Rule of
St. Augustine. The patron saint of the Pauline Fathers is St. Paul the Hermit
of Thebes in Upper Egypt. He is regarded as the first hermit in church history. His
“Vita Pauli” was witten by St. Jerome (cf.
“Patron Saint”).

Pauline Fathers at common prayer
The spiritual characteristics that shaped the Pauline Fathers from their beginning
and distinguish its legacy and historic development are (taken from the order’s
constitution):
- contemplation of God in solitude,
- emphasis on prayer, especially communal liturgical prayer,
- a busy and frugal life,
- apostolic work inspired by the Holy Spirit, based on the signs of the time,
serving both the Church and one’s neighbours,
- dispensation of sacrament, mainly the penitential sacrament,
- demonstration of the importance of Mary in the mysteries of Christ and the Church,
imitation of her virtues and propagation of her worship.
